Explained: thanks for coming to my TED talk
- This meme is a phrasal meme that involves stating an opinion or concept and then concluding it with “thanks for coming to my TED talk” (or variants thereof).
- It appears to have started in 2015 within the BBC Sherlock fandom on Tumblr.
- One of earliest examples of this meme is a text post by Tumblr user @beysuspng (since deactivated) titled, “listen up”. The body of the text post states, “john and sherlock”. On or around 28 May 2015, the post was reblogged by the original poster with the addition of, “thanks for coming to my ted talk”.
- Similar posts started showing up within the BBC Sherlock fandom thereafter.
- For example, on 30 June 2015, a very similar post was published and reblogged. The original post stated, “sherlock and john”, and the reblog by the original poster had the addition of, “thanks for coming to my ted talk”.
- By September 2015, the phrase “thanks for coming to my TED talk” became more popular within the fandom and was recognized as a meme within the fandom.
- However, from 2015 to early 2017, the meme more or less remained within the Sherlock fandom.
- Starting mid-2017, however, the meme started getting popularity outside of the fandom. It is difficult to pinpoint a specific point at which the phrase received widespread popularity on Tumblr, however.
- One popular non-Sherlock post that made use of a variant of the phrase was published on 26 May 2017. The post stated, “shirts, socks, underwear, and shorts are the ‘meat’ of an outfit because you feed them to the washing machine after one use.” (This post received more than 60,000 notes.)
- Another popular post came on 18 July 2017. The post stated, “the fact that people dont consider game of thrones as ‘cringey’ of a show as doctor who or sherlock is literally just because of how many men are obsessed with it. thanks for coming to my ted talk.” (The post received more than 30,000 notes.)
- By September 2017, the meme became quite popular throughout Tumblr. A popular instance of the meme from that month is about Donkey from theShrek franchise. (The post garnered more than 60,000 notes.)
- (Note about Meme Documentation: Meme Documentation does not document fandom-specific memes unless they leave the fandom. Although Meme Documentation was documenting in 2015, this meme would not have been documented back then since it was fandom-specific at the time. Since the meme did not leave the fandom until 2017, it has been documented as a 2017 meme.)
