Love is: Sherlock killing Magnussen, essentially sacrificing his own life in place of Mary’s when trying to find appledore. For John and for his happiness. Always for John.
Love is not: Mary attempting to threaten and even kill Sherlock right after John got him back, simply because she didn’t want him telling the truth out of fear that it would inevitably end with John leaving her. For herself. And only for herself.
Mary knew when she shot Sherlock that if he died as a result of the wound, John would be hurt by it— and she absolutely did not care.
Sherlock on the otherhand knew that if Mary died as a result of Magnussen, it would hurt John. He also knew that sacrificing himself was the only way to keep that from happening, and he absolutely did not care. He sacrificed himself anyway.
See the difference between Sherlock and Mary? Ones love is pure and good… the others is deceitful and self-serving. It wasn’t meant to last, guys.
